Architectural Lanterns

Walking around Salem, photographing interesting buildings and windows is the first step in the process of developing a lantern in this series. A heavy paper template is created  for each window design. Pots are thrown on the potter’s wheel , trimmed and allowed to dry to a leather hard stage. The template is traced multiple times onto the pot. Each window is then hand cut with a small exacto knife and embellished with incised designs to add more architectural interest. The pots are slowly dried, bisque fired, glazed and re-fired to complete the process. Each finished lantern is a unique work of art.

Lanterns vary in size from 6” to 10” and in complexity and time invested. Please contact Dot for price and details on any particular lantern you are interested in.
